The BYU International Folk Dance Ensemble brought family history to life through dance, and this year's performance of 'Journey.'
"The idea here is that all of us as individuals come from something bigger than ourselves," ensemble member Levi Hancock said.
The group wanted to show through the performance how American culture is a melting pot.
"There's still all these unique ideas and cultures and peoples that are coming here, to the United States, and we in the show are trying to honor that and respect that," he said.
Hancock shared that experts and professionals, in the style of dance the team is learning, teach them these dances. This year, they learned a Serbian dance from someone who is Serbian.
"It's a lot of jumping up and down and a lot of cardio," Hancock said.
Hancock said it is fun to learn new styles of dance and to embody the culture.
"It's been really fun to perform and to share that culture with people out here that have never seen Serbian dance or all these other dance styles before," Hancock said.
Bailey Tucker has a personal connection to the theme of journey. She is a third-generation dancer in the International Folk Dance Ensemble.
"My grandpa did it. My parents met on the team," Tucker said.
Her grandfather helped bring clogging to the West. This is another style of dance that the team enjoys performing.
"This year's clogging number is really special because I actually got to help choreograph it with my parents," Tucker said.
She said clogging is her favorite style of dance.
"I feel really close to my family, really close to my heritage, to my American patriotism," Tucker said.
Tucker also performed in the Indian Bollywood number.
"You get to be super sassy, show some personality," Tucker said.
Tucker said the song tells the story of a love triangle and has a lot of fun movements.
