BYU hosts Dunk on Cancer fundraiser

Dunk on cancer

The Wilkinson Student Center, BYU Store and Simmons Center for Cancer Research have partnered with BYU Cougars men's basketball for the Dunk on Cancer fundraiser, raising money for cancer research on campus.

“We’ve been doing this for the past couple years, it started with Coach Pope, and Coach Young has continued this campaign and really ran with it and made it his own,” Savanna Bagley, an employee at the BYU Store, said.

Every dollar raised has helped to find ways to prevent, treat, diagnose and cure cancer.

“All the proceeds from this product line go to the BYU Simmons Center for cancer research, which they support student led cancer research,” Bagley said.

This collection features four new products, including a BYU hoodie, some cougar socks, a royal blue basketball and a Brigham Young hat.

“Coach Young was very involved with helping develop the look of all the products, so like we originally had a different logo on here, and he was like, 'Swap it out, I want the BYU, the Brigham Young script,'” Bagley said.

Studies have shown that about 40% of adults will face the risk of developing some sort of cancer in their lifetime.

Cancer hits close to home for many, and students are rallying behind the fundraiser to support research that could help save lives.

“My aunt died a few years ago because of cancer, and so it’s something that I care a lot about, and whenever I have a spare moment to help out with charity work and service organizations, I love to help individuals with cancer,” Frankie Cappello said.

Dunk on Cancer is just the beginning. The BYU Store and the BYU Men's Basketball team are committed to raising funds and are already preparing for next year's fundraiser.
