BYU freshmen came ready to compete in the First Year Experience Pickleball Tournament inside the Richards Building on March 8.
The tournament was divided into two brackets.
“We have a upper and lower bracket," Samantha Merrell, First Year Experience Committee member said. "We just have people rate themselves if they thought they were good or a beginner.”
There were 16 teams in each bracket and the games were single elimination.
Students were paired with each other and competed with unique team names. Team pair names included the Toads, Los Católicos, Monkeys and more.
As the winners of the tournament advanced, the losing team treated themselves to snacks. They also had the option to play other sports in different rooms.
Claire Martin, Office of First Year Experience peer mentor, said she felt good about this event. She also said it had a really good turnout.
“I think the students are enjoying it and that’s really matter most,” Martin said
Josh Cruze, a freshman at BYU, competed in the pickleball tournament as part of the Toads. He gave advice for students hoping to compete if the tournament returns next year.
