BYU Fencing Club invites newcomers to pick up the sword

The BYU fencing club is giving students a chance to step into the world of competitive swordplay.

Whether beginners or experienced fencers, club members are sharpening their skills with quick footwork, strategy and friendly competition.

Every practice begins with drills and technique training. Students work on quick steps, defensive moves and attack strategies guided by experienced fencers.

Jonah Collier, a club member, has not fenced since high school. His love for the sport has rekindled since joining the club.

"I thought, 'Maybe I wouldn't be able to get back into it.' But you know, there's a lot of good people here,” Collier said.

The second half of practice is for open fencing. Students suit up and go head-to-head in friendly matches.

Marvin O’Bryan, another club member, said he admired fencing for a long time. It wasn't until his friends told him about the club that he decided to give fencing a shot.

"It was difficult to learn how to get over the fear of getting stabbed at, and then in turn stabbing someone, because you sort of freeze up," O'Bryan said. "Eventually, I was able to sort of get used to the bounce of going back and forth fencing."

The fencing club is open to all students.
