BYU celebrates Fall with their Choral Showcase

Students in Brigham Young University's choirs are warming up their voices for their Fall Choral Showcase this Friday.

After learning new music and practicing vocals, the Men's Chorus, Women's Chorus, Concert Choir and BYU Singers are ready to present a varied program of classical and modern choral works this weekend.

The five choral organizations offer all students, both graduate and undergraduate, an opportunity for training, experience and personal growth in all aspects of the choral art.

Jahari Williams has been singing with the BYU Choral Program for about four years now.

"I think singing at BYU gives you an experience unlike any other choirs. Nationally, globally, we sing for the Lord, we sing with the Spirit and it helps us make something beautiful that you don't quite get anywhere else," he said.

The concert will feature the music of Shawn Kirchner, with Kirchner at the keyboard, in master classes and more.

"One of the songs we're doing is by a composer named Shawn Kirchner and it's called 'Zion', and it sings about the Savior coming, about there being a city, a city that's of God, one people, one heart, and one mind," Williams said.

The guest artist, Shawn Kirchner, is a composer, arranger and songwriter based in Los Angeles, whose choral works are performed worldwide.

As a pianist, Kirchner performs his music throughout the country in collaboration with choirs and is celebrated for his wide stylistic range, improvisation and musicianship.

The overarching theme for this showcase comes from the Book of Psalms in the Old Testament.

"Every Thursday during rehearsal, someone gives a devotional that's related to the Psalms in some way before we start rehearsal and it really gets us into the mindset of the music that we're singing, and so I'm really excited for everyone to hear it this Friday," said BYU choir concert choir student Gavin Hatch.

The Fall Choral Showcase tickets are already sold out, but if you are still looking for a weekend of music, all are welcome to join via livestream through the link in the BYU Choirs' Instagram bios.
