BYU ADHD Club provides community for neurodivergent students

The BYU ADHD Club is working to create a community where neurodivergent students can find friendships and navigate the challenges of academia — and life — together.

Every Thursday evening, ADHD club members gather on campus to play games, work on homework and simply hang out. One thing the group especially likes to do is talk.

“We allow ourselves to be loud; we enjoy it,” Sydney Fleck, a member of the club, said.

Members said that this tight-knit club is a key part of their social life and has led to many lifelong friendships.

"I met my best friends here," Fleck said.

"Amber — one of the girls here — she and I have hung out more than I have hung out with anyone else," Megan Johanson, another club member, said.

Different students show up at each meeting, so no activity is the same. Some members arrive for the first time and some are absent, perhaps because they simply forgot.

"I technically signed up last semester, but in typical ADHD fashion, I forgot to come to a single meeting last semester," Mason Egan, a club member, said.

One meeting's theme was "Do the Thing" night, an evening dedicated to tackling tasks the students had procrastinated.

The ADHD club is also strives to help students gain a better understanding of their ADHD.

"One of my first weeks here, we did an ADHD crash course thing. So it’s like, 'What is ADHD? How does it affect you?'" Egan said.
