ASB services move locations with building's impending demolition

BYU resources such as enrollment services are moving to different campus locations as Provo City planning records confirm plans to tear down the Abraham O. Smoot Administration Building and replace it with a new structure.

The planning application, project number PLPPA20250289, states that it was submitted by BYU on May 30. The current application status states: complete application.

The city has accepted the submittal.

Submittal #1 shows that the city received site plans, landscaping plans, elevations and other documents on June 2. No documents elaborating on these plans are available at the moment.

Other information waiting to be received includes the irrigation plan, SWPPP (storm water pollution prevention plan and documents), utility plan and profile, parking plan, summary tabulation, traffic flow plan, project plan written description and the complete set of plans.

The application status also states that there are no hearings for this planning application.

BYU services located in the ASB are preparing to move out of the building and into different areas of campus.

BYU Enrollment Services moved to the third floor of Wilkinson Center.

A person from enrollment services was spotted moving boxes to the Wilkinson Student Center. It is not known whether they were moving it directly from the ASB.

When asked about the demolition, Enrollment Services did not give further information about it.

Boxes can also be seen in one of their offices in the ASB.

Laptops on the floor and keyboards in boxes were also spotted in the Administration Solutions office, indicating they are planning to move out as well.

Off-Campus Housing office will move out of the ASB on June 20. They will move to the former Oak Ridge School.

A representative from BYU off-campus housing offices confirmed the move in a phone call.

Benefits Services is moving out of the ASB on June 24 and 25 and to the Talmage Building.

Employee compensation and recruiting moved out on June 12. They are moving to the former Oak Ridge School.

Employee relations are moving out of the ASB on June 26. They will move into the JKB.

BYU Benefits Services confirmed the information in a phone call.

Erin Rowan, business manager for the computer science department at the Talmage Building, said in an email that her department is not involved with anything regarding the ASB building.

Several resources may be moving to the former Wasatch Elementary School BYU purchased in October 2021.

Upon inspection of the site, an A lot permit is placed where parking is located. A golf cart was also spotted at Wasatch, indicating potential activity in the building. It was gone by the evening.

A person was also spotted on the property moving a box though it is unknown if the person is an employee of BYU or if they went into the Wasatch building to deliver items.

No trespassing signs from BYU were found in the building entrances. The doors were also locked.

Employees from Big Red Asphalt were spotted outside the Wasatch Building working on applying a seal coat to the pavement on behalf of BYU.

Robert Marsh of Big Red Asphalt confirmed that they are working on behalf of BYU to restripe the parking lot at the former Wasatch Elementary building. He is not completely sure if BYU is going to expand parking spaces.

The current campus map does not list a new name for the former Wasatch Elementary School building and Oakridge School. BYU Physical Facilities' Campus Map Service referred to University Communications when asked about the matter.

BYU electrical shop confirmed in a phone call that cubical work is being done at the former Oak Ridge School.

University Communications released the following statement.

"Plans to replace the Abraham O. Smoot Administration Building (ASB) are underway, with BYU awaiting final approval to build a new administration building.

Upon approval, the ASB will be razed. It is anticipated this decision will happen sometime this fall, but employees have already started to move out of the building this summer.

Departments currently housed in the ASB will reside in temporary spaces on campus, with the majority of personnel to be housed at BYU East, the former Wasatch Elementary School building.

The Office of the President and most members of the President’s Council are moving into the Hinckley Center.

BYU is coordinating closely with select Provo City departments on required application and permitting processes."
