BYU Students celebrate Asian culture through dance at fusion event

Students are preparing to show off Asian culture through song, dance and fashion at BYU's upcoming Fusion Celebration.

The celebration will take place on March 7 at the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom and is set to showcase various cultures across the Asian continent.

A group of students representing the Philippines has been practicing a variety of dances. They gather twice each week for rehearsals and are eager to show off their culture.

The group practices three different dances, including the tinikling. It is performed as two people strike sticks against each other and then turn away while dancers step in and out, trying to avoid getting their ankles caught.

Megan Jensen, this year's Philippines section leader, moved to Canada with her family when she was three years old. Being a part of the Philippines section allows her to honor her heritage and stay in touch with her Filipino roots, she said.

Jensen's favorite part about being Filipino is the joyful spirit of the people, she said.
