BYU softball loses big in 10-2 blowout against Maryland in Mexico

BYU softball falls to 1-2 on the season after losing 10-2 against the Maryland Terrapins in their third game of the Puerto Vallerta Challenge in Mexico.

The game was never in question after an abysmal third inning for the Cougars where they gave up seven runs to take a big deficit early on. The Terrapins did not score any of those points through home runs or even doubles and triples, but through slow and steady singles that set their players up for a position to score.

Maryland was led in scoring by freshman Sammi Woods who finished with three hits, two runs, and two RBIs on three at-bats. Overall, her team ended the game 13-for-24 at-bat and a solid .542 batting percentage.

As for BYU, they had five different players finish with a hit. Former WCC Player of the Year, Violet Zavodnik earned a double and two RBIs as her team ended 6-for-20 at-bat for the game.

Maryland won the battle on the mound by a landslide. Senior Trinity Schlotterbeck was able to hold down the fort and protect the Terrapin’s big lead for just over four innings thanks to four strikeouts and only five hits from the Cougars. Meanwhile, BYU played four different pitchers over the span of four innings after freshman Kaysen Korth gave up four runs and six hits in her two innings pitched. Korth was coming off of a massive performance against Wisconsin on Thursday where she stuck out nine batters and only gave up three hits.

The Cougars have one more game on Saturday against North Dakota State to finish out their time in the Puerto Vallerta Challenge. The games won’t get much easier as they head out on the road once again next week to participate in the Littlewood Classic in Tempe, Arizona.
