BYU baseball's first Big 12 schedule filled with tough competition

BYU baseball’s first Big 12 schedule will feature six teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season in West Virginia, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Miami and 2023 Super Regional finalist Texas.

Despite not facing conference champion and College World Series semifinalist TCU, the Cougars’ 2024 regular season schedule will test Head Coach Trent Pratt’s ball club in their first season in the Big 12.

BYU will open the 2024 campaign at the MLB Desert Invitational in Arizona from February 16-19 before heading to California to face UC Davis.

Familiar West Coast Conference foe Gonzaga comes to Miller Park for the Cougars’ home opener on February 29, game one of a three-game series. BYU is 4-9 since 2019 against the Bulldogs, dropping two of three last year in Spokane.

Other notable matchups include the Big 12 opener at West Virginia March 7-9, the conference home opener vs Houston March 14-16, and home-and-away games against instate rivals Utah, UVU, and Utah Tech.

The final home stand of the season features a three-game set against Cincinnati May 9-11 and the home finale against Grand Canyon on May 14 before the Cougars finish the regular season on the road at Kansas State.

The top 10 teams from the Big 12 regular season will compete at the 2024 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship on May 21-25 at Globe Life Park, the home of the 2023 World Series Champion Texas Rangers, where BYU played OSU in a three-game series back in 2022.

While preseason polls have not been released yet for the 2024 season, TCU is expected to defend its conference title, with the likes of Texas, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech with a chance to dethrone the Horned Frogs.

The Cougars finished their final season of the WCC sub .500 with a 24-28 overall record for a seventh place finish in the conference. With key players Austin Deming (drafted) and Cole Gambill gone, Coach Pratt will rely heavily on his returning stars Cooper Vest, Boston Mabeus, and Luke Anderson, alongside 19 new additions and 11 true freshmen.
