Timeline: Catalonia debates independence throughout history

Catalonia has its own language, its own parliament, and a notoriously rocky relationship with its home country: Spain.

The parliament of the autonomous region declared independence on Oct. 27, and Spain responded by approving direct rule over the region and dismissing Catalonia’s government.

This timeline shows a history of the Catalan independence movement in the 20th century and recent events leading up to the declaration.
