Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve will highlight Education Week as this year's devotional speaker.
His address will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 11:10 a.m. in the Marriott Center and will be open to the public. The devotional will also be streamed live on the LDS.org home page.
Elder Holland was ordained a member of the Quorum of the Twelve on June 23, 1994. Prior to this calling, he served as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy for five years.
In 1980, Elder Holland was named the ninth president of BYU. During his time as president, he oversaw the establishment of the BYU Jerusalem Center, expanded the role of BYU's Center for International Studies and headed a $100 million fundraising campaign for the university.
Previously, Elder Holland worked at BYU as dean of the College of Religious Education and as a religion instructor. His BYU history also extends to his time as a college student. Elder Holland holds a bachelor's in English and a master's in religious education from BYU. He later also received master's and doctorate degrees in American studies from Yale University.
Throughout his life, Elder Holland has served in many religious and educational capacities in the LDS Church. He has fulfilled positions as church commissioner of education, area president, young adult committee chairman, regional representative, institute teacher and full-time missionary in the British Mission.
