Provo Police kill man armed with airsoft gun

Provo Police fatally shot a 24-year-old man who threatened them with an airsoft rifle which resembled an AR-15.

Police say they were responding to a domestic violence call Sunday morning when they encountered Cody Evans of Springville in his vehicle with a weapon that resembled an AR-15. Police say Evans drove off, feigned ramming an officer and ran a red light.

Evans later ignored commands to stop and show his hands, said officers, and pointed the Airsoft rifle at them. The orange tip which indicates the rifle is a toy had been removed. Two officers, one from Provo and one from the Utah County Sheriff's Office, then opened fire from 100 feet away, hitting Evans three times.

The officers were not wearing cameras, said police. A countywide officer-involved shooting team is investigating.

A vigil for Evans is schedule for 6 p.m. Monday in Pioneer Park.
