Have dinner with a principal

Students interested in pursuing a career in education should not miss the Dinner with a Principal networking event with the McKay School of Education Feb. 27.

Students networking with individuals in the education industry at last year

Students networking with individuals in the education industry at last year's Dinner with a Principal. This year's will take place Feb. 27, 6:30 p.m. in the Skyroom.

Dinner with a Principal, now in its fourth year, allows students to talk to alumni from the McKay School and ask them questions about career paths and explore other opportunities in education.  A public relations student, Sarah Stoddard, who also serves as a public relations coordinator for the McKay School, encourages students to take advantage of this networking opportunity.

'Dinner with a Principal is a great place for BYU students to interact with local education professionals in a relaxed environment,' Stoddard said. 'This is the chance for students to ask questions about the field and get advice about how to get involved.'

Stoddard said that principals from both elementary and secondary schools, as well as board members of the McKay School of Education Alumni Society will attend.

Shauna Valentine, public relations director of the McKay School, said the conversations that take place at Dinner with a Principal are far from boring.

'The conversations are lively and engage all who attend,' Valentine said. 'After a long day at school, the principals, administrators or teachers who act as hosts are very engaged and enthusiastic about talking about what they do and why they are passionate about education.'

Elementary education students find the event to be worth their while. Corrine Fiso shared her thoughts from last year's event.

'It was a fun night, and I was able to actually talk to people who would be hiring and interviewing me in the future,” Fiso said.

Dinner with a Principal will take place Feb. 27, 6:30-8:30 p.m., at the Skyroom Restaurant in the Wilkinson Student Center. Early-bird registration is $10 and can be done here. Any questions can be directed to Shauna Valentine, shauna.valentine@byu.edu.
