BYU Broadcasting brings home 11 regional Emmys

Otavio Souza received a text from his producer that contained only two words--'We won.'

'I texted him back, 'We won what?'' said the senior broadcasting student. 'My producer replied, 'We won the Emmy.' It was a huge surprise.'

Souza further expressed his surprise and excitement when he found out the show he worked for at BYUtv International, 'Football Fall Season,' won an award. This show is one of 11 that received a Rocky Mountain Regional Emmy Award on Oct. 6, 2012. BYU Broadcasting received 19 nominations.

'Football-Fall Season' is a sports program that introduces American football into Latin American countries. The show broadcasts football games, and Souza comments in Portuguese. The games are also broadcast in Spanish.

Saul Leal, the station manager of BYUtv International, said he is honored that BYUtv International won four Emmy awards. Another award winner is 'La Cocina de la Abuela,' (Grandma's Kitchen) a show that demonstrates an important aspect of Latin American culture. Leal said BYUtv International provides wholesome, quality content for more than 25 million individuals in 17 Latin American countries.

'It's not only about being a haven of great content, it's about being a standard,' Leal said. 'BYUtv International has become the cultural channel for all of Latin America.'

Terri Pappas, BYU Broadcasting coordinating producer said the recognition helps establish BYUtv as a credible station.

'Because we're a university, sometimes people automatically assume we don't have great production value in our shows,' Pappas said. 'This gives us the recognition to say we are producing some really great shows that can compete with other shows in our region.'

Pappas said this accomplishment of BYU Broadcasting will benefit more students like Souza as they gain hands-on experience in the television industry. Souza said he is grateful for the opportunity to be apart of an award-winning station in as an undergraduate.

'Getting out of college with an Emmy award on your resume is something big,' Souza said. 'The experience I'm getting here is going to be awesome. I'm grateful to be at BYU and have this experience even before I graduate.'
