Starting off the Semester with Stand-up

Humor U is holding its first shows this week on Sept. 7 and 8. Tickets go on sale Sept. 4 at the Wilkinson Student Information Desk for $4 pre-sale and $5 at the door. There will be two shows each day in the evenings at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m.

Humor U is different from other comedy-based clubs on campus. Humor U consists strictly of stand-up comedy where one person performs a rehearsed act, whereas Divine Comedy and LOL focus on sketch and improvisational comedy. Humor U is also a club that welcomes all who enjoy telling jokes.

“(My goal is to) make each member feel welcomed and a part of the group. It’s hard to tell jokes if you don’t feel close to the members,” said Aaron Woodall, the president of Humor U.

Hannah Wing, the Humor U public relations officer, described Humor U as “a really comfortable environment for such an intimidating hobby. [It’s] a place to come do what I love to do.”

The club has its weekly meetings on Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. in the Maeser Building auditorium, room 321. At these meetings, members share jokes, and people interested in the club are given opportunities to become members. Even though students must be invited in order to become members, all are welcome to attend Wednesday meetings.

R.J. Ward, a junior pre-comms major from Winter Haven, Fla., described his first Humor U meeting as “a small atmosphere where I feel welcomed.”

After Humor U’s first show, there will be an Open Mic Night on Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. for guests to come watch a free show and have the opportunity to tell their own jokes. For more details and Humor U events information, visit the Facebook page at facebook.com/officialhumoru.
