After months of campaigning and fighting his way to the top, Rick Santorum announced Tuesday afternoon he would suspend his campaign indefinitely.
His three-year-old daughter, Bella, has a rare medical condition called Tristomy 18 which is often fatal. She was hospitalized last Friday, causing Santorum to reconsider his focus on his presidential campaign.
'We were both concerned about being the best parents that we could for our children,' Santorum announced Tuesday in his home state of Pennsylvania.
After eloquently recalling the successes of his campaign to this point and thanking his followers for their support, Santorum announced the best option for him and his family would be to suspend his campaign.
'We won more counties than everyone in this race combined. I found a deeper love for this country,' Santorum said. 'We made a decision over the weekend that while this presidential race is over for me ... we are not done fighting.'
He described his thoughts in the beginning of the race having won Iowa as 'game on.' Although he said those at the White House may be thinking 'game over,' Santorum said he disagrees.
'There's a lot of greatness in this country and we just need leaders who believe in that,' Santorum said. 'This game is a long way from over.'
