Trespassing
Jan. 11 -- A professor reported a student trespassing in a lab in the Widtsoe Building. The student had been banned from the lab to prevent cheating. By the time the police arrived, the student was gone. The incident is still under investigation.
Jan. 16 -- Police found two men and two women trespassing at LaVell Edwards Stadium. When the officers arrived on the scene, the trespassers attempted to hide, but were found, arrested and issued citations for criminal trespassing.
Jan. 16 -- Two male BYU students were arrested for trespassing at LaVell Edwards Stadium after climbing over the stadium's fence. They were arrested and issued citations.
Animal Problem
Jan. 14 -- Three student custodians at the Testing Center reported seeing two wolves running toward the Former Presidents' Home. After thoroughly surveying the area with spotlights, officers could not confirm the presence of wolves on campus. The officers returned to ask the custodians if they were sure the animals were wolves, to which one custodian responded, 'for sure, they were really big.' One of the students then said he wanted to wait for the wolves so he could scare them away. The officers suggested getting back to work.
Suspicious Activity
Jan. 13 -- Police responded to a report that three people were driving around Helaman Halls, wearing white masks. The white-masked subjects were BYU students who claimed they were 'just trying to have fun.' They were following another car of students who had a plastic toy gun that they were pointing at the masked students. Both parties were warned for their behavior and released.
Jan. 13 -- A group of juveniles were reported to be seen inside the JFSB parking structure and looking inside cars. The reporting party said after being noticed the group left parking level 2. Officers were unable to locate the group, however, and nothing was reported to be missing from the cars.
Jan. 14 -- Police responded after gunshots were reported at Helaman Halls. When the officers arrived, they found a person practicing with a bull whip. No further action was taken.
Jan. 14 -- A female student left behind her personal belongings in the Wilkinson Center while visiting the women's restroom. Upon returning, she found a woman going through her purse. The student challenged the woman, who fled but was apprehended by police. She had not taken anything so she was not charged, but she had an extensive criminal history. The woman had been dropped off at the bus stop and was waiting for her next bus to arrive.
Disorderly Conduct
Jan. 13 -- Approximately 12 students were flying paper airplanes in the Tanner Building after hours. A custodian asked the group to discontinue, but the group would not comply. Officers were called and sent over to talk with the students, who apologized and said they were on a group date and did not realize the problem they were creating.
Theft
Jan. 10 -- A bike was reported stolen from Helaman Halls.
Jan. 11 -- A male student was apprehended by police after shoplifting two books, valued at $250. The student had $500 in cash and said he was going to pay for them.
Jan. 11 -- Police received a report that items were stolen from a student's car. The student called back shortly thereafter and said she found the items.
Jan. 13 -- A student reported a stolen computer and backpack. The student had left them in the student athletic building.
Jan. 13 -- A man reported a stolen briefcase in the JFSB. Soon after, the man realized he had misplaced it.
Lost Property
Jan. 11 -- A student called, requesting a bike lock be cut. The bike lock cable was threaded through the student's brake cable. Police cut the lock and put the bike in storage, hoping to get the bike back to its rightful owner.
Jan. 12 -- A student turned in a $100 bill to BYU police after finding it on her way home.
Fire Alarm
Jan. 12 -- Students set off the fire alarm in the common area of the Foreign Language Student Residence while cooking. The food burned, producing smoke, which set off the fire alarm. All residents of the building were evacuated.
