Fundraiser offers more opportunities to give

By Whitney Clark

The annual fundraiser, 'Choose to Give', is giving students not only the opportunity to donate money, but also an opportunity to donate time.

This year, the campaign is running from March 23rd to the 27th and is looking for students to volunteer their time during the week''s activities.

'Anyone and everyone can come,' said Karen Gifford, a senior from Manteca, Calif., studying humanities, who is in charge of training for the campaign.

Gifford said there will be three upcoming volunteer training sessions. The first session will be on Thursday, March 19th at 11:00 a.m. in room 284 of the TNRB. There will also be two more sessions held in room 3380 of the WSC, one on Friday, March 20th and the other on Monday, March 23rd.

'The training meetings are only 30 minutes long,' Gifford said. 'We just explain what we are doing and why.'

She said students who come to the training would also receive free cookies and a T-shirt.

Those who do volunteer can do anything from advertising the fundraiser in classes to helping out at the week''s activities, Gifford said.

Nathan Zacharias, a junior from Manteca, Calif., studying chemical engineers, is the chairman of students for the campaign and said 'Choose to Give' is a fundraiser where students give to students.

'We are trying to reach as many people on campus as we can,' Zacharias said.

He said the money raised goes to programs on campus such as college annual funds, scholarships and activities for students.

'I do it because it makes me feel good,' Zacharias said. 'It is an act of giving.'

Hillary Miller, a junior from Arcadia, Calif., majoring in media arts, also works on the committee for the campaign as the activities chair.

'It is so much fun and so easy to join,' Miller said. 'You need no experience or background.'

Miller said that in volunteering you meet a lot of really fun people and help out at the same time.

Students who are interested in volunteering can attend one of the training sessions, or contact Kim Gibson at 422-4183.

'We need a lot of volunteers,' Miller said. 'The more the merrier.'
