Students in Utah looking for an international experience don''t need to look much farther than the state''s newest university. Utah Valley State College has been adding new study abroad programs to supplement the schools transition to university status July 1.
With programs in locations ranging from South America to Europe and even Japan, UVSC has summer study programs that are flexible and generally cheaper than any other campus'' program in Utah.
Grant Skabelund, director of international study programs, said the International Study Office has added five new programs this year, and as the university grows and continues to receive more funding, they will augment the school''s programs with additional internships and international study options.
Each year the school has about 130 student participants from all over Utah and from every institution of higher education in the state.
'We already have nine students accepted from BYU, but really, the students who participate come from all over the state,' Skabelund said. 'We even have one unique student that has never stepped foot on our campus from New York who''s participating in the program this year.'
Participation costs range from approximately $1,500 for programs in Mexico to $8,000 in London. These estimated totals include accommodations, transportation and admission fees, as well as airfare, tuition and souvenirs. The overall cost of the experience, however, depends on the spending habits of the participant.
UVSC''s newest program to Japan offers students the opportunity to enhance their Japanese language skills while visiting Tokyo, Yokohoma, Nikko, Kamakura and Kyoto.
'This is a great opportunity for anyone to immerse themselves in rich history, culture, sites, technology, language, buildings and to see Japan from the business to country side and get a little bit of everything,' said Junko Watabe, coordinator for international studies in a news release.
'BYU students are welcome. We enjoy having them participate,' Skabelund said. 'Last year 10 to15 percent of our participants were from BYU. They are always great to work with.'
