SCERA Center for the Arts Presents "Plaid Tidings"

By Alex Ingersoll

'Plaid Tidings,' the holiday version of the classic 'Forever Plaid,' opens today at the SCERA Center for the Arts, 745 S. State St., Orem.

The popular classic is a story about four harmonizers -- Sparky, Smudge, Jinx and Frankie -- who get a chance to return to earth after being hit and killed by a bus on their way to see the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show.

'Plaid Tidings,' the holiday version of 'Forever Plaid,' features the same four characters, who draw upon nostalgia of classic Christmas memories that all ages will enjoy.

''Plaid Tidings' is a charming show that provides a new entertainment option for the season,' said Adam J. Robertson, SCERA president and CEO in a news release.

Among many things, the show will feature a segment of a Perry Como Christmas special, and a set of dancers who play New York's Radio City Music Hall Rockettes.

April Berlin, SCERA operations manager, said the set is oversized to give it a 'larger-than-life' feel. Additionally, the four main characters were required to learn 32 songs in four-part harmony - not an easy feat for a holiday show.

'The show is great for a broader audience,' Berlin said. 'There is great nostalgia for the older audience, and there are great characters to hold the attention of youngsters.'

Director Robinne Booth said 'Plaid Tidings' has sentimental and family appeal.

'It's got something for everyone,' Booth said, in a news release. 'It's got upbeat music and a fast pace, great choreography and tight harmonies, hilarious personalities and nostalgic songs from the past.'

Berlin said while SCERA has produced 'Forever Plaid' many times previously, this is the first time SCERA has produced 'Plaid Tidings.'

'This show is very light, very fast paced with great choreography,' Berlin said. 'It is very festive. ... We think it will be the best show we've ever done.'

'Plaid Tidings' runs at 7:30 p.m. through Dec. 22, with no shows on Sunday. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for children, seniors and students. For more information, call (801) 225-ARTS, visit www.scera.org, or visit the box office at 745 S. State St., Orem.
