Dance to Give Back to Community

By Tiffany Wilson

For the price of a donated coat, or five dollars, students can come to 'Coats and Mocktails,' a Christmas dance party and charity event, with music, dancing, the latest snowboarding movies and a 'drink' bar, serving eggnog and Red Bull mixers.

' a party where people can have a central location to donate warm clothing, to have fun and help these charities,' said Devereaux Smith, a student at BYU and the director of the Q Network, a club comprised of presidents from local college snow clubs.

'Coats and Mocktails' is on Friday, Dec. 14 at 7 p.m., at the Pinnacle Security Warehouse, at 1290 Sandhill Road in Orem.

'All the different sponsors have given us free products so we can maximize the proceeds that go to needy families, local families in the community,' said Clint Severson, the vice president of the Q Network and a student at BYU. 'What better way to explore your community by having fun, and doing service at the same time.

Coats for Children and Telekids, a charity program at Alta Ski Area, will be helped by this activity.

'Sub for Santa will also benefit from our charity,' Smith said. 'People who wouldn''t normally have Christmas will have Christmas this year, thanks to, hopefully, BYU students'' participation in the program.'

The event is split up into three sections, after the premiere of the Tech 9 Snowboard movie, with pro-riders and a raffle, Smith said. A soundproof movie lounge will show snowboarding and skiing movies will be all nightand there will also be a DJ. Red Bull will have a VIP lounge, with the virgin cocktail bar, hosted by Red Bull and Cream O'' Weber.

'It is going to be the largest event we have had so far,' said Severson. 'You can be at a charity and have fun at the same time.'

There will also be foosball tables and billiards, Smith said.

'It''s a way to relieve stress right before finals begin,' said Caleb Pope, the president of the Snowriders club at BYU. 'This gives students the opportunity to serve, to have a good time in a good environment, as well as meet new people who are involved in the winter snow sports scene.'

Q Network is the umbrella organization over the BYU Snowriders and the UVU club, and all three have come together to make this charity a reality, said Smith.

'So many people see snowboarders and skiers as people who get in trouble, or not up to any good,' said Severson, 'We are not just punk snowboarders but we are out here to serve our community as well.'

Students interested in volunteering can go to www.qnetwork.us to sign up .

'Coats and Mocktails' is being sponsored by Autumn Garage, Blindside Company, Pinnacle Security, Snowbird, Surface, Cream o'' Weber, Alta Ski Area and Skullcandy

'What better way to spend a Friday night than watching snowboarding and skiing movies, having drinks, meeting new people, and helping out local kids?' Pope said. 'What better way could you really spend Friday night?'
