The Weber State Wildcats held off the BYU women''s basketball team Wednesday afternoon, defeating the Cougars 65-54 in Ogden.
The Cougars were down by eleven and cut the Wildcat lead to three with a minute to go in the game, but a missed free throw gave Weber State the ball back and sent the Wildcats to the free throw line.
'I give a lot of credit to Weber State,' BYU head coach Jeff Judkins said in a news release. 'They played well and executed offensively.... We had our chances, but there were a couple of times when we didn''t make defensive stops when we needed to.'
Weber State converted all their crucial free throw attempts down the stretch as the Cougars watched the time wind down to give them their sixth loss of the season. The Wildcats shot 20 free throws, making 18, while the Cougars only made four of their six attempts.
The win gives the Wildcats their fourth straight victory of the season and breaks an 11-game losing streak to BYU. The game marked the first time Judkins'' teams had ever lost to Weber State.
The game was close until the second half when Weber State started to pull away. The Cougars tried to catch up, but a few tough calls and a few misplays put the Wildcats up for good.
Freshman Mindy Nielson score a team and season-high 15 points for BYU.
The Cougars will next host the Bruins of UCLA at 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Marriott Center.
