Understanding Your BYU Meal Plan

By Deborah Peterson

The Cannon Center and Cougareat are not the only places that accept meal plans.

There are places all over campus that provide students with a variety of dining choices. From a sit-down dinner in the Wilkinson Center Skyroom to a grab-and-go meal from the Marketplace Caf? in the Tanner Building-there is something for every occasion.

Before sitting down to eat or picking up some food at one of the on-campus dining locations, it is important to understand what each meal plan offers.

Dining Plus provides students with $10.40 in Dining Dollars each day to be used anywhere on campus. Remember, first-year residents of Helaman Halls may not use Dining Plus at the Creamery on Ninth. Any unused portion of the daily allotment will carry over to the next day with a maximum balance of $75 at any given time.

'It was too easy to just let money build up and waste away,' said senior Chris Williams, who had a meal plan as a freshman.

The Heritage Classic plan allocates $8.10 in Dining Dollars each day. Students can eat anywhere on campus. Unused funds will also carry over, capping off at $75.

Both Dining Plus and Heritage Classic plans offer a discounted rate in the Cannon Center cafeteria. From Monday to Saturday, breakfast is $2.30, lunch is $3.45 and dinner is $4.65. Sunday''s lunch and dinner are offered for $5.75.

Open Door 50, 100 and 150 meal plans allow students to dine in the Cannon Center as frequently as they wish. An additional amount of Dining Dollars is provided each semester depending on the student''s plan: $50 for Open Door 50, $100 for Open Door 100 and $150 for Open Door 150. This money can be used at any of the on-campus dining locations. Take advantage of this extra money. Eating in the Cannon Center can get old, said junior, Laura Knecht.

The Diner''s Platinum plan allocates $30 on the first day of the agreement and every Monday for the rest of the semester. Dining Dollars may be used anywhere on campus. Unused Dollars also carry over to the amount of $75. The cafeteria discount rates are as follows: Monday to Saturday-breakfast is $4.85, lunch is $4.95 and dinner is $5.65. No discount is offered on Sunday.

Diner''s Gold provides students with $4.70 in Dining Dollars each weekday. Up to $2.50 may carry over each day, with an accumulated maximum of $20 at any given time. Discount rates are offered in the Cannon Center cafeteria. All meals Monday through Friday are $4.70. Full price will be charged on the weekends.

All meal plans are tax-exempt, which means you are saving 6.25 percent every time you eat.

There are more than twenty places to use a meal plan. Why not skip the vending machines and use it to try something new?
