LYON, France – Paced by Jonathan Tavernari’s 22 points, BYU improved to 2-0 on its foreign tour of France with an 89-59 victory over Lyon BBC, a National 2 level team.

Tavarnari proved too much to handle from long range as the 6-foot-6 sophomore forward scored 15 of his 22 points on 5-of-7 shooting from behind the arc. He added four assists and three rebounds.

The first quarter of the game was hard fought and physical as both teams battled back and forth for an edge. With the score even at 27-27 in the second quarter, the Cougars made the run that gave them the momentum, scoring 10 straight points on the way to a 44-35 halftime advantage. The Cougars took control of the game in the second half to cruise to the win.

Tavernari got a lot of support in the scoring column. The Cougars have scored 90 and 89 points in their two games in France. Seven of BYU’s eight players scored and four reached double figures.

Juniors Lee Cummard and Trent Plaisted posted double-digit points and rebounds for the second straight game. Cummard scored 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting while grabbing 11 rebounds. Plaisted missed only one field goal attempt, going 5-for-6, while totaling 14 points and a team-best 12 boards.

Senior guard Sam Burgess scored in double figures for the second consecutive game with 15 points on 6-of-9 accuracy, including 2-of-3 from three-point range. Burgess and Cummard each made a team-best five assists in a game that saw seven of BYU’s eight players register an assist.

Senior point guard Ben Murdock was a perfect 3-for-3 on three-point attempts for nine points while adding four assists and four rebounds. In the post, junior Gavin McGregor had another nice outing with eight points and seven rebounds while returned missionary sophomore Chris Miles added four points on 2-of-3 shooting and three boards.

BYU played Monday’s game after a six-hour bus ride from Paris. The Cougars face a quick turnaround with a game Tuesday against St. Etienne, a Pro B level squad.
