BYU''s Orpheus Winds will grace the stage of the Madsen Recital Hall with their music Thursday night at 7:30.
'I think it''s going to be a very enjoyable concert,' said Jaren Hinckley, assistant professor of music at BYU.
Orpheus, the Greek legend, is said to have learned music from the god Apollo himself, hence the name of the group that has been performing for more than 30 years at BYU.
The concert will begin with a standard that any wind quintet will know, the Wind Quintet in E flat major, Op. 88, No. 2, by Anton Reicha.
'We love it,' Hinckley said. 'The audience will come away from that piece humming.'
The quintet''s favorite and most challenging piece, David Maslanka''s Quintet No. 1, will wrap up the evening.
'The Maslanka is very challenging. We''ve each had to spend some time preparing for it,' Hinckley said.
The piece is divided into three movements, all capturing America. The first is based on a birdcall, the second the chug of the New York subway, and the third is inspired by the Brooklyn Bridge.
'Somehow it just sounds American,' Hinckley said.
Hinckley said he thinks that many people go to chamber music concerts thinking the music all sounds the same but that these pieces won''t be anything alike.
'You''re going to get three completely different kinds of music,' he said.
The Madsen Recital Hall will continue to be filled with music into the weekend. James Margetts, assistant professor of piano at Chadron State College in Nebraska and a former BYU student, will give a free recital in the Madsen on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
'I remember him very well as a student,' said Jeffrey Shumway, professor of keyboard studies. 'He was an amazing sight-reader.'
Margetts would often substitute at the last minute for other pianists and Shumway said he would often do better than they did.
'He''s one of the most naturally gifted piano students I''ve seen here,' he said.
Both concerts are free to the public. For more info, call 422-6339 or 422-4922.
