Fundraiser Provides Chocolate Treats

By Ashley McKell

Want to help the community and get a gift for your sweetheart? There is a way to kill two birds with one stone if you donate to Classical 89 before Valentine''s Day.

Classical 89 will have a one-day, all-day fundraiser to raise money for the station on Wednesday. Tune into 89.1 FM or go to the Web site to get updates of how much is being raised.

Listeners can donate to Classical 89 online at www.classical89.org, by calling the station at 800-321-8911, or mailing a check to Classical 89, Brigham Young University, Provo, UT 84602. If a financial pledge is made before Wednesday, you will receive a gift certificate for free chocolates, nuts or other treats from Mrs. Cavanaugh''s.

'Many of our listeners come forth to donate on the last day of the fundraiser,' said Laura Tevaga, KBYU membership manager. 'This year we decided to do ''the last day first'' and do it in one day!'

Classical 89 will experiment with this new form of fundraising with a goal to get at least 350 new members.

'Some people don''t know that their donations really do make a difference,' Tevaga said.

Classical 89.1 FM is the only all-classical radio station in Utah. According to the Classical 89 Web site, it is also a non-profit organization that strives to 'enrich the lives of radio listeners through inspiring and enlightening programming, employing the concepts of great music and sound ideas to reflect the timeless standards of Brigham Young University.'

'We have received a good response so far but we have a long way to go,' Tevaga said.

For college students, this is a nice way to help a good cause and receive a gift to either keep or give.

'I think it is a nice incentive. Some people may be motivated by a gift even though the real reward is in the donation,' said Jared Rodman, a senior studying nutritional science from Akron, Ohio.
