Guitars Unplugged on BYU-TV

By Ashley McKell

Whether you missed guitars unplugged in March 2006 or you want to replay every second of that night, you now have the opportunity.

BYUSA teamed up with students from the Communications and Theater Media Arts departments to provide a broadcast airing Saturday at midnight, Wednesday at 3 a.m. and Feb. 17 at 5 a.m. on BYU-TV. The broadcast will include the 17 bands that made it to the finals of Guitars Unplugged 2006.

Each band has at least one BYU student. With more than 100 bands that auditioned, it''s an honor for those selected. The broadcast is an hour long, featuring the band''s own compositions.

The performance was so popular that Cory Heizenrader, a senior from Fresno, Calif., studying physiology and developmental biology, wanted to make it accessible to everyone.

Tom Reis-Cairo, a junior from Toledo, Ohio, studying Spanish teaching, also helped put on the production. 'If BYU students like good music it is a great opportunity to see some local talent,' Reyes-Cairo said.

Heizenrader and Dale Green, a communication''s administrator in the news lab, proposed the idea of the concert being broadcast at BYU early on in the audition and planning process in 2006.

'We are pleased to air this concert,' said Diena Simmons, BYU broadcasting program service member. 'It is good music and energy with a great look and feel.'
