BYU bowls over Oregon Ducks, 38-8

Number 19-ranked BYU defeated the Oregon Ducks 38-8 to win the Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas bowl Friday, in dominating fashion.

BYU quarterback John Beck's passing accounted for two touchdowns and 375 yards. Beck also scored a touchdown on the ground. BYU's Curtis Brown ran for two TDs.

For quite a while, it appeared that Oregon would be shut out, but the Pac-10 team managed to put one touchdown on the board, plus a two-point conversion.

Oregon was unable to ever turn the game to its advantage. Even after the Ducks finally put a touchdown on the board, Beck rapidly responded with a touchdown of his own, sealing Oregon's fate.

The win is BYU's first bowl victory since the 1997 Cotton Bowl, and signifies a turnaround in the program, which has been energized by the coaching of Bronco Mendenhall.

Former BYU coach Gary Crowton is the Oregon offensive coordinator, and the game had been widely viewed as a matchup of the new and the old Cougar coaches.
