Preference Dance to Take Students to Paradise

By Natasha Sabey

Ladies, gather up your courage and pick out your favorite guy to dance, skate or roll the night away with this weekend.

Each of this year''s BYUSA-sponsored Preference dances will take students to a tropical paradise in the midst of a chilly November.

'It''s going to be a fun activity,' said Suzanne Smith, a sophomore from St. George and volunteer on the BYUSA Preference committee. 'It''s a nice place for people to have a luau break in the middle of fall semester.'

Preference is one of the few times each semester girls get to take the initiative and ask someone on a date.

'It gives the opportunity for girls to get out of the box and ask boys to the dance,' said Amanda Pyper, BYUSA event lead for Preference. 'It puts in the hot seat for once.'

Two of the dances offered will be semi-formal.

'Train to Paradise' will be held on Friday and Saturday at the Heber Valley Railroad, featuring a train ride, dancing and refreshments.

'Luau: The Big Kahuna' will be on Saturday in the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom, featuring dancing, a chocolate fountain and tropical activities -- including a photo booth and hula hoop contests. A tropical dinner is also available for a higher price.

For those who prefer to attend Preference activities in a less-formal atmosphere, two casual dances are also available.

'Coconut Roller Craze' will be held on Friday at Classic Skating, at which couples can enjoy roller-skating and refreshments.

'Island on Ice' will be held on Saturday at the Seven Peaks Ice Arena, where there will be ice-skating, refreshments, games and a performance by Comedy Sportz.

Pyper said she hopes students will attend because it will be a nice break to get away from the cold winter weather.

'The activities are going to be very fun,' she said. 'It''s something different than usual.'

Preference tickets can be purchased in advance at the WSC information desk.
