The organizers of the 2006 Boy Scout Powwow are still short on volunteers. On Oct. 28 and Nov. 11, 2006, BYU and UVSC will participate in the powwow, and each school will concurrently offer classes so that Boy Scouts can earn badges quickly.
'It''s a lot easier than going and doing it all by themselves,' said Tod Myers, program administrator for CES Youth Programs. 'Merit badges we offer are typically required for rank of eagle and that are popular such as space exploration.'
But the powwow does not yet have enough instructors. The instructor position requires only what volunteers are willing and able to give. The duties can range from simply providing adult supervision and interaction to working back and forth with another volunteer to instruct the classes, share experiences and sign off badge cards.
'Anyone really can do it,' Myers said.
There is a three-step process to volunteer. Volunteers must first fill out a one-page application and five-question quiz found online at powwow.byu.edu. Second, they will interview with event coordinators, get badge information and study up for the event. Third, volunteers attend the event and offer time and experience to the Scouts.
'Students, faculty or staff, anyone is invited,' Myers said. 'We hope to include the whole campus community.'
Applications can be submitted until Oct. 28. For more information, contact CES Youth Programs at 801-422-3817.
