Brigham Young University Head Football Coach Bronco Mendenhall announced Feb. 22, 2006, that assistant coach Brian Mitchell is leaving BYU to accept a position as cornerback coach at Texas Tech University. Mitchell has been the cornerback coach for the Cougars for the past 12 seasons.
?Brian has been an integral part of the success of BYU Football as player and a coach, and we are sorry to see him leave,? Mendenhall said. ?I?m grateful for his excellent service to our program. Brian is one of the bright young coaches in the profession, and we wish him the best.?
Mitchell has been the cornerback coach since coming to BYU in 1994. Prior to that, he played in the NFL from 1991-93 with the Atlanta Falcons and the Dallas Cowboys. While at BYU as a player Mitchell earned first team All-WAC honors in 1990, and was also an All-American in track, where he ran the opening leg for the 400-meter relay team. Mitchell played in four bowl games at BYU and coached in five. He completed a B.S. in clinical social work in 1995.
Coach Mendenhall has indicated he will begin an immediate search for an assistant coach and will take the time necessary to locate the best-qualified candidate.
