Hale Center Theater in Orem calls for 'Oliver!' actors

By Amber Callister

Scott Montgomery, BYU student and theater professional, is directing the upcoming musical 'Oliver!' at the Hale Center Theater in Orem, which has auditions next week Nov. 29th.

'There''s quite a few parts available,' Montgomery said. There''s at least 20 parts, plus the ensemble.'

The theater is looking for men and women of all ages with singing abilities to audition for the show. Those auditioning for 'Oliver!' should come prepared with sheet music to sing 32 bars of a Broadway musical song. An accompanist will be provided.

The theater is also looking for boys, or girls who could pass for boys, ages 8-18 with excellent singing voices and/or athletic, dance or gymnastic ability.

Although the show involves several parts for children, Montgomery also expressed the need for strong adult character actors.

'The show requires a lot of kids,' Montgomery said. 'But we also need a lot of adults. We have a lot of difficult parts that require older actors.'

Montgomery also addressed those with an interest in acting who have never done so before.

'Feel free to audition,' Montgomery said. 'I''ve cast people before in a professional show who have done a lot of singing but who have never acted. People who have a desire and want to get involved go ahead and come to the audition.'

'Oliver!' is Montgomery''s fifth show as a director.

'This is not the first big show,' Montgomery said. 'The largest show I directed was 'Evita,' at the Capitol Theater.'

Montgomery hopes to see a large turn out for 'Oliver!' He said they already have a number of people signed up for auditions, and they expect quite a few more.

Auditions take place on Nov. 29 at 6 p.m. Those interested in auditioning for the show can call to schedule an appointment at 226-8600. Auditions will be at the Hale Theater in Orem at 225 W. 400 North.
