Congratulations

The front-page of July 12th's Daily Universe caught our attention. A large color photo of a golfer sat under the title 'BYU student takes state title.' A small, inconspicuous side article with no photo, wrote about another golfer, BYU junior Todd Miller, who had played his way into the final pairing for the state amateur title. But Todd didn't win, because he passed up the opportunity to compete in the final match for the state championship since it was scheduled to be played on Sunday. First, our sincere congratulations to Todd, for his fine play, and his even finer example. Second, shame on the Utah Golf Association for continuing to play this amateur event on the Sabbath. We understand the need for many to work on Sunday-health care providers, fire fighters, police officers, and yes, even professional athletes. But this was an amateur event, not something that had to be done to support a family, and Todd chose instead to keep the commandment to 'Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.' How nice it would have been if the Daily Universe had chosen to highlight this effort to do what is right instead of honoring those willing to break the Sabbath. The world honors those who break the Sabbath; the Daily Universe should seek to achieve a higher standard. Our hats off to Todd Miller.
