American hegemony

I don't like the direction the current administration is taking American foreign policy. Former U.S. National Security Advisor Zbigniev Brzezinski has written a book, 'The Choice,' about the dilemma America currently faces. He says that America is clearly at the peak of its economical, political and cultural power, and is facing an urgent choice between global leadership and global domination. He also says that we are in a position to choose which of these options we will take.

I think this is an accurate assessment of the situation now and it is a plausible prediction of how America will turn out in the upcoming years. I think that the ramifications of his ideas are very substantial. Either we will become a respected leader in world politics or a dominating hegemony. We are experiencing a pivotal point in political history that will define what America will become after the fall of USSR and the end of the Cold War. How will America fill the new vacuum of power? I think the policies of George W. Bush are the beginning of a path that will lead us to domination, not leadership. This isn't something that will happen overnight. It won't happen under Bush, or even in this decade. But what about 20 years from now? Or 30 years from now? What will America be like? Will we be a country that tries to lead through consensus and respect, or continue with the forceful, unilateral tone that George 'W' espouses?
