When it comes to hosting local bands, fans look for an intense atmosphere, high energy and stars that aren't only in the sky. Starry Night aims at offering all of these things.
The local music venue opened two and a half years ago with the intent of showcasing artwork along with local musical talent. As time went on, Starry Night merged exclusively toward hosting the music scene of Utah Valley.
'It started as something where we were just going to host smaller bands,' said Kelly Wilson, manager at Starry Night. 'It has grown in audience size and appeal lately though.'
The venue houses bands of every genre, excluding no one. Although Wilson admits that hardcore bands have found a haven there, there's no band unwelcome, she said.
'It's a venue for musicians,' Wilson said. 'Everyone who plays here really has a great time.'
Some bands play exclusively at this venue, preferring the atmosphere and hospitality to every other venue in the valley, Wilson said.
'There are a few touring bands who won't play anywhere else,' Wilson said. 'Bands have called from all over the country to get shows.'
Wilson grew up in Provo and found motivation to open Starry Night from her own musical experience. The indie-folk artist said she might even perform at her own venue some day. Most importantly, she aims for integrity in her performers.
'This isn't just a business,' Wilson said. 'We're here for the bands.'
Maile Sanst, manager for the emo-punk band, The Trademark, appreciates the value of Starry Night.
'I know the band really like playing there because they always have such a positive, involved crowd there,' Sanst said. 'You can really feel a better energy because of the setting. It's definitely our favorite venue in Provo.'
BYU students value the energy Starry Night provides as well.
'There has to be an area to rock and an area to chill,' said Adam Eshenroder, a senior from Boise, Idaho majoring in psychology. 'This really makes for a comfortable setting.'
With its growing popularity, Starry Night has plans to relocate to a larger venue where it will be able to host open-mic nights and well as battle of the bands type contests.
For now the venue is open for booking to bands looking for an intimate environment.
'Bands that play here play for the people, not the money,' Wilson said. 'It's not sterile; it's more of a community.'
Starry Night is located at 198 West Center St. A calendar of upcoming events can be found on their Web site at
