Students honor professors

By Carrie Rowe

Students will get a chance to make their professors blush Monday, Feb. 30, 2004 when the Student Honor Association will recognize faculty for their efforts to promote honor and integrity.

Honor Your Professor allows students to nominate professors who embody the vision of BYU and promote the principles of the University''s Honor Code. A booth in the Wilkinson Student Center will be open today through Friday, Feb. 27, and students can give reasons and stories for why their professor should be one of the 30 faculty members recognized.

Joe Miller, executive vice president of the Student Honor Association, said many professors do an amazing job of setting an example, and the university wants them to know how much students appreciate their support.

'We want them to be recognized because we feel like they are some of our strongest leaders,' Miller said. 'In our own majors, in our own professions, they''re people that we look up to. They''re maybe the best in their field and have still carried with them these principles of honor, integrity and honesty.'

Professors will be recognized in their classes, and will receive a special Student Honor Association pin as well as a certificate. Jeannie Papic, adviser of the Student Honor Association, said the best part about the presentation is surprising the professor.

'They''re so fun about it -- they''re really cute,' Papic said. 'They blush, the students clap and cheer, and the faculty member gets real shy and kind of hems and haws and grins. It''s just a real warm thing to do for the faculty, to let them know that we really appreciate their efforts.'
