Letter to the Editor: Represented wrongly

Dear Editor,

If the purpose of Wednesday's Daily Universe article on Multicultural dating was meant to decry discrimination against minorities, perhaps the article and the photograph would have been more effective if they had been truthful.

The article described the plight of minority students because they don't get asked out or date as much. I was quoted in the story, but the reporter failed to mention that the reason I don't date is because I have a boyfriend - a white boyfriend in fact.

My race has nothing to do with my dating habits and the implication in the story was simply false.

Moreover, the photograph that shows me 'Waiting by the phone,' is also inaccurate because that never happened.

I was promised that the photo would not have a caption and that it would be labeled as a photo illustration because it is not a real situation.

The Daily Universe was trying to portray minorities at BYU as the underdog - the poor students who miss out because they look different.

I would just like to thank the newspaper and the photographer on this piece for perpetuating that myth and for using me as their guinea pig.
