The winter landscape at BYU will get a little brighter this Saturday, Jan. 26, as the band Colors performs its first solo show at BYU.
Although the band has played on campus before, this is the first time BYU has invited Colors to entertain the student body, said Millie Segura, executive director of BYUSA Campus Activities.
Colors said it is excited to be invited.
'We''ve been wanting to play down there forever,' said Russell Dixon, guitarist for the group. 'A lot of our support comes from BYU.'
All three members of the band - Ryan Merrill, percussion, Brian Tibbets, guitar, and Russell Dixon, guitar - are students at Utah State University in Logan. Despite the distance between schools, the band holds a special place in its heart for BYU students.
'I love them to death and can''t wait to play for them,' said Merrill.
Two acoustic guitars and a percussionist do not add up to the typical idea of a band. Colors has a unique musical style and presence that appeals to the masses.
'Their music is clean and upbeat, and we thought it would appeal to a BYU audience,' said Segura, 20, a sophomore from Glendora, Calif., majoring in American studies.
Colors has been together since 1994 when Merrill, Dixon and Tibbets were in high school together.
All three members of the band plan to graduate from Utah State in April and continue focusing on the future of Colors, Merrill said.
The band is working on a new album and will be going on tour this summer.
'We''d all like to try it,' said Merrill. 'If all else fails we''ve got degrees under our belts.'
The show is Saturday, Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom. Tickets can be purchased at the Wilkinson Center Information Desk for $6, or at the door for $7 with student ID, and $8 without.
