By Allison Benne

Douglas M. Campbell, 58, died Monday of pulmonary fibrosis. Campbell, BYU professor of 30 years, taught a broad range of classes in the Computer Science Department, said John Higgins, a computer science professor.

Campbell began teaching at BYU in 1971 after receiving a doctorate from the University of North Carolina. He completed undergraduate studies at Harvard.

Campbell also wrote several books on topics ranging from retirement planning to Halley''s Comet.

'He should be remembered for being one of the brightest people that showed up at BYU,' Higgins said.

As well as teaching, Campbell was involved in the community. He served on the Utah Board of Directors, the American Civil Liberties Union and volunteered for Planned Parenthood of Utah.

Campbell was born May 4, 1943 and grew up in New Zealand, Midway Island, Guam Island and California.

In 1966, he married Jill Thomas. Together they had four children. Campbell is survived by his mother, wife, children and two grandchildren.
