Viewpoint: Stop bickering

By Reese Bryant

In response to the reactions to the Army ROTC fiasco at the BYU-Utah game, I have only one thing to say. Wake up!

Wake up to the fact that all parties involved were in the wrong in some way or another. There seems to be an awful lot of blame pointed at the 'over-enthusiastic' cadets, the 'lawbreaking' fans, and the 'ignorant' police. Who cares? Wrongs were perpetrated by all. All should be apologetic. No matter how much we justify what went on, whether or not 'we were untrained in crowd control,' or 'everybody was storming the field' or 'we have not received any formal complaints,' we need to take responsibility for our own self, and our own actions. Furthermore, we all should be forgiving of one another.

Wake up to the source of all this bickering. We shouldn't have to go back to Primary to understand that contention is of the devil. To sit and banter about trivial details only allows the adversary to enter into our halls and our hearts with the greatest of ease.

Wake up to what this university is really about. I rarely see an editorial which expresses appreciation for the Army and Air Force Cadets who raise and lower the flag at the ASB everyday, or the grounds crew who beautify our campus, or the custodians who clean our classrooms and restrooms, or the BYU Police and student security who protect our assets and personnel. I have yet to see an editorial praising BYU students and faculty for being good, solid, worthy men and women. I only see editorials that are based on trivia or controversy.

We are part of a truly special school. I love BYU. We shouldn't let mistakes made tear down what we have. We are above that. Often, it is not what happens that counts, but how we react to it.
