Campus lecture to discuss multilingualism

BYU faculty member Randall Jones will discuss multilingualism at the International Forum Series Wednesday, Oct. 24.

'Multilingualism is relevant to everyone because of our modern global world,' said Randall Lund, assistant professor of foreign language methodology and teacher education.

There are different kinds of multilingualism depending on the situation within each culture, Lund said.

However, in Switzerland multilingualism is important because of the country has four official languages.

The United States is faced with questions concerning multilingualism and how to deal with the varying languages spoken throughout the world, Lund said.

Jones is a professor of Germanic and Slavic languages at BYU and is a former member of Cornell University''s faculty of modern languages.

Jones received his bachelor''s and master''s degrees from BYU and a master''s and doctorate degree from Princeton University.

Jones'' research interests and specialties include German corpus linguistics, pedagogy and the German language.

Courses taught by Jones at BYU include German phonetics and pronunciation, history of the German language, structure of modern German and the New Testament.

The lecture will be at noon in 238 HRCB.
