Y students are too sheltered

Dear Editor,

As an alumni, I enjoy keeping up with campus news through newsnet.byu.edu. However, after reading what seems like the tenth letter in the past year complaining about people who wear (gasp) socks with their sandals, I couldn't help but think that some of today's BYU students are far too sheltered.

If others' fashion faux pas are causing you to get your shorts in a wad, then maybe it's you who needs a reality check. Dunk your head in a barrel of water, read the 'world' section of a national paper, then let's see if socks with sandals really seems so high on the 'offensive list' after all.

Is it any wonder that many people outside the school see BYU students as 'clones' who all talk, act, and dress alike? Students who break this stereotypical mold are met with scornful looks, judgmental attitudes, and of course, complaining letters in the campus newspaper.
