Children's dance program debuts

A fluttering mass of pinwheels, butterflies, rainbows and other moving curiosities will grace BYU campus this weekend, May 18-19.

The Young Dancemakers, the performing company of Brigham Young University's Children and Teen's Creative Dance program, will present its annual Evening of Dance, 'Destination Imagination'.

A new collaborative work directed by Pat and Kathie Debenham and Christine Ollerton, 'Destination Imagination' will transport the audience into a world where the ordinary meets the extraordinary, a place where visual and kinetic whimsy delight and engage audiences of all ages, according to Michelle Kramer, media representative.

The dance suit showcases the technical, creative and performance abilities of this company of more than 100 dancers.

'One of the great things about our program is that the children help us with the choreography,' Ollerton said.

The company is made up of children ages four to 18 who will perform the various dances they helped choreograph.

The dance concert will feature titles like 'Whacky boomeracks,' and 'Common Oddities.'

The evening will feature performances by three dancers who have received recent honors. Kelby Debenham is this year's Sterling Scholar in dance for the state of Utah, Sarah Stott is a national PTA Reflections winner and Jessica Philbrick is a Utah PTA Reflections winner.

Also featured at the concert will be a collaborative dance created and performed by the Debenham family as a fond farewell to the Young DanceMakers. Kathie and Pat Debenham will be moving on after completing more than 35 combined years with the BYU Children and Teen's Creative Dance program.

Ollerton will continue the program along with newly appointed assistant director, Kathleen Sheffield.

'Destination Imagination' will be performed in the de Jong Concert Hall May 18 and 19. Tickets are $6 for general public and $5 for children, students, faculty and staff.
