Underground science: Students in action

Upstairs but still underground, Greg Harris demonstrates the newest thin-film deposition chamber. A foil-covered vaccum chamber designed to grown thin-film media while allowing measurments at the same time.

'It's the best vaccum of any chamber we have here,' Harris said.

Students like Harris assist professors and spend a sizeable amound of time underground in the labratory.

Yenny Martinez, a 21-year-old senior from Santa Ana, El Salavador majoring in physics said activity in the lab is nonstop.

'I spend a lot of time down here,' Martinez said. 'Some one is doing something every hour of the day.'
