Elder M. Russell Ballard encouraged saints to be positive and prompt in responding to prophetic counsel, speaking in the Sunday morning session of general conference.
'Knowing that President Hinckley is God''s prophet endows us with responsibility,' said Elder Ballard, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. 'If you will listen to and follow the living prophets and apostles, you will not go astray.'
He said it is becoming too common for members of the church to disregard the prophet''s counsel.
Elder Ballard told parents they have the responsibility to be examples to their children in following church leaders.
'We can''t expect young people to take to heart the things the prophet says to them if we show a complacent heart to the things he says to us.'
He encouraged church members to pay attention to the things the leaders of the church have taught during general conference.
'If you will listen not just with your ears, but with your heart, the Holy Ghost will testify to you the truthfulness of the messages,' Elder Ballard said.
Elder Ballard told families to gather together and discuss the counsel given by the prophet and leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
