Some students subscribe to the idea that love transcends all relationship problems.
There are a lot of other factors that can help predict marital bliss, said Jeffry H. Larson, chair of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program and professor in the School of Family Life.
Larson will speak about his new book, 'Should We Stay Together' at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 22, in 3228 WSC.
'The book can help predict if you''ll be happily married before you get married,' Larson said.
Larson said a large number of married couples who come in for counseling can trace their problems to when they were dating.
'It''s almost scary ... It''s incredible how many marriages are doomed even before they get started,' he said.
Larson said he will talk about the major factors that can help predict a good marriage, including individual traits, communication skills and the context of the relationship.
'I''m going to review some of the specific predictors of marital satisfaction so they''ll come away with specific things to ask themselves about their relationships or about themselves,' he said.
Larson is speaking in conjunction with Women''s Month, sponsored by the Women''s Resource Center.
Attendance is open to the public.
