Baseball complex almost ready for use

By Brett Larsen

Homeless for months, the BYU baseball and softball teams now have a roof over their heads.

On Wednesday morning, construction crews began installing a massive, tent-like cover atop the press box at Miller Park, BYU''s new baseball and softball complex.

Dangling from a crane above the field like a gigantic, tan blanket, the roof was moved slowly into position, then gradually anchored to six large poles over the press box. From there, workers will stretch it out over the stands with cables till it resembles a carnival pavilion.

Securing the new roof, which is made of Teflon and fiberglass fabric, is not a one-day job. BYU''s on-site construction engineer Craig Lybbert said that it will take several days to completely install it.

For now, the new roof is the same color as the cougar in BYU''s logo. However, the sun will bleach it white over the next three to four months, Lybbert said.

Construction on the stadium overall is moving along on schedule, Lybbert said. Though the plumbing system hasn''t yet been completed, the interior of the facility is nearly finished.

'If they swept it out in there, it would look almost done,' he said.

The first game scheduled at Miller Park will be on April 12, when the baseball team faces New Mexico.

The grand opening of the park is slated for April 21.
