Fair is for every major

By Miriam Oh

With over 125 employers representing companies from every region of the country, students attending BYU''s Career and Internship Fair will find there is definitely something for everyone.

This year''s fair will be bigger than last winter, almost double in size, said Debbie Foutz, advisor for Career Placement Services.

'At this size, any student can benefit, if they want to, and some students really know how to take advantage of the opportunities,' she said.

Typical of career fairs, students in certain majors mistakenly come with the notion that these fairs will not help them in the field they plan to enter, Foutz said. But that is not the case.

'Sometimes career fairs are perceived as biased, but that''s not our intent at all. We''ve really focused on meeting the interests of students in every field,' Foutz said.

Companies specializing in retail sales to computer software to government agencies will be looking to fill positions in all divisions of their company, she said.

Students often assume companies are looking for sales clerks or computer programmers by the company name, but students need to remember every company has needs that apply to every major, Foutz said.

Connie Cluff, director of the Internship and Career Services office for Communications, planned a career fair for the College of Fine Arts and Communication at the beginning of February.

According to the department''s Web site, information indicates the department determined that both employers and students would best be served by attending the larger career fair on Jan. 31.

'In general, fairs don''t lend themselves very well to liberal arts students. Our fair would have been specialized and more closely related to students in the communications field. But students in the liberal arts can find equal success in larger career fairs like the one coming up,' Cluff said.

Disappointed at the cancellation of this year''s fair, all employers scheduled to attend the Communications career and internship fair have signed up to attend BYU''s larger career event, she said.

Career fair coordinators are confident for this year''s event and as reiterated many times by Foutz, 'These fairs truly are for everyone.'
