Truman G. Madsen, BYU emeritus professor of philosophy, will speak at Tuesday’s devotional, Nov. 21, in the Marriott Center.

“He is one of the great philosophers, teachers, historians and essayists in our time and generation,” said Paul H. Peterson, BYU’s dean of church history and doctrine.

Peterson said Madsen is a very gifted orator that has been a great defender and advocate for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Madsen received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in history of philosophy from the University of Utah.

He also earned a doctorate degree in the history and philosophy of religion from Harvard University.

Madsen was BYU’s Richard L. Evans Endowed Chair of Christian Understanding from 1973 to 1993.

He has also been honored with the Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Teacher Award and the Outstanding Educator Award.

As a professional, Madsen was the director of the Institute of Mormon Studies, the Judeo-Christian Studies Center and the Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies.

He has authored several books including “Eternal Man,” “Joseph Smith the Prophet” and “Jesus of Nazareth.”
